Travel insurance explained
The policy you never use is still the most important thing you pack.
What a good policy covers
- Emergency medical treatment and evacuation. The most important part, especially where healthcare is expensive.
- Trip cancellation and interruption for covered reasons such as illness.
- Lost, stolen or delayed baggage.
- Personal liability if you accidentally injure someone or damage property.
Common exclusions
- Pre-existing medical conditions you didn't declare
- Adventure activities such as diving, trekking at altitude or skiing, unless added
- Incidents involving alcohol or drugs
- Unattended belongings
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the medical cover limit, and does it include evacuation?
- Are my planned activities covered (for example, trekking above a certain altitude for Machu Picchu)?
- What is the excess (deductible)?
- What counts as a valid reason for cancellation?
- Is there a 24-hour emergency helpline?
