4 days in Buenos Aires

Tango, steak and grand cafés that stay open until dawn. A 4-day plan.

Buenos Aires feels like a European capital transplanted to South America, with broad avenues, ornate cafés and a nightlife that doesn't start until midnight.

Day by day

  1. Day 1: The historic centre

See Plaza de Mayo and the Casa Rosada, have coffee at Café Tortoni and tour Teatro Colón.

  2. Day 2: Recoleta and Palermo

Visit La Recoleta Cemetery, El Ateneo bookshop and MALBA, then dinner at a Palermo parrilla.

  3. Day 3: San Telmo and La Boca

Browse the San Telmo fair (Sundays), visit La Boca and end the night at a milonga.

  4. Day 4: The Tigre delta

Take the train to Tigre for boat rides through the delta.

Make it work

  • Best months: Mar–May, Sep–Nov. See the season calendar.
  • Book ahead: the most popular sights and restaurants, especially in peak season.
  • Where to eat along the way: Don Julio, El Preferido de Palermo, Café Tortoni.
  • Getting around: The Subte (metro) and buses use the SUBE card.

Short on time, or staying longer?

With less time, keep the first days and skip the day trip. With more, add a slower day for a neighbourhood from our best areas to stay, or choose more from the full list of things to do.

Opening days and times change, and some sights close one day a week. Check before you go. Last reviewed October 2026.
